With artists as Jozef Israels, Anton Mauve and Hendrik Willem Mesdag, Blommers was one of the first artists to live and work in Den Haag. While most of them found their inspiration in the landscape, Blommers focused on the genre piece, in particular the fisherman life in Scheveningen. He depicted it multiple times in interiors, dunes and seascapes with figures. Also, mother and childscenes were among his favorite themes. Blommers frequently painted the intimate relationship between mother and child, occupied in daily activities, for which his wife and one of their children were model.
