In the course of his long career, Van Daalhoff acqiuired the reputation of poet-painter on account of his attempts to capture ideas like meditation, purity and grief with the help of brush and paint. On the other hand, he also painted merry scenes, wich he committed to canvas in a spirit of experiment. The village near a bridge is a remarkable example of his experiment in the pointillé technique, a way of painting he became acquainted with through Jan Toorop and his friend and patron H. P. Bremmer. In view of result, the experiment must surely be called a successful one.
