Atmosphere and tonality are very important in Tholens entire oeuvre. As plein-air painter he brought a lot of variety in his motives and he chose human labor rather. In Scheveningen he painted - as Toorop did in Katwijk - the population and their fishing boats. Through an introduction by Toorop he exhibited in 1889 at the avant-garde artists groups Les Vingts in Brussels.
