The French painter Francis Picabia (1879-1953) best known as a Dadaist, his work ranged from Impressionist painting to radical abstraction, from iconoclastic provocation to pseudo-classicism, and from photo-based painting to Art Informel. He studied from 1895 to 1897 at the École des Arts Décoratifs in Paris.

His early work, shown in 1903 at the Salon d'Automne and the Salon des Indépendants, was in the style of Impressionism. From 1908, fauvistic, pointillist (neo-impressionist), cubist and abstract elements became visible in his work. Because of the large number of times Picabia changed his style - apparently effortlessly - in style, he is considered the prototype of eclecticism.
