Herman Kruyder is one of the most important Dutch expressionists. He developed rapidly: while around 1919-1920 he mainly made poetic landscapes, three years later he worked in a highly personal, expressive style with more direct and brighter colours. He became known as an artist of farmer’s life, with motifs as villages, animals and flowers.
This painting was inspired by Marc Chagalls series of ‘Le cochon vert’.
