Auguste Herbin started his career as an impressionist painter. In 1903 he went to Paris where he was influenced by fauvism. Since 1913 cubistic elements entered his work resulting in an abstract and decorative style in the early twenties. In the second half of the 1920’s, geometrical forms begin to dominate.
In this relatively early work, fauvist as well as impressionist influences are to be perceived .. The composition is traditional with the row of willowtrees reaching the horizon; the technique is highly modern with its broad pointille-brushstrokes.
