Theo van Rysselberghe transferred the pointillism of Georges Seurat into a personal imagery. The human figure was a beloved theme for the artist: he would immortalize many friends and acquaintances as Emile Verhaeren, Maurice Maeterlinck and Octave Maus, who Van Rysselberghe knew because of his connections with artist association Les XX.
