The Greek painter Périclès Pantazis became acquainted with impressionism in Paris. At the age of 26, he settled in Brussels and became a member of the artist association ‘La Chrysalide’, which later got included in the new group ‘L’Essor’. In 1883 Pantazis co-founded the well-known modern association ‘Les XX’, of which Ensor, Finch, Schlobach, Khnopff, Van Rysselberghe (a.o.) were members. They protested against the ruling conservative academism. Pantazis loved to work at seaside and especially in the dunes of Nieuwpoort, where he painted in his refined colours. Pantazis died at the age of 35 of tuberculosis.
