Because of his high drawing and painting skills, his colleagues called him ‘Leonardo’ (in short ‘Leo’) Gestel, to the Italian homo universalis. At the beginning of the twentieth century Gestel was one of the most modern artists in The Netherlands.
In 1909 he studied the birchtrees around Nijmegen and stylized them to obtain a more ‘spiritual’ expression.
