As a beginning artist, Jo Koster was successful as a portraitist. Supported by the ‘Koninklijke Subsidie voor Vrije Schilderkunst’ (Royal Grant) she worked in Paris – in the studio of Colarossi – and Brussels, where she took courses with Ernest Blanc-Garin in the art of portraits. She fell under the spell of the neo-impressionism and made colourful paintings in dots and stripes. After three years in Brussels, Koster settled in The Hague and Laren. Besides the landscape, Koster painted the famers and workers in the region (Het Gooi). Around 1902, she moved to Zwolle in the north of The Netherlands. She strolled around nature to paint the landscape, the picturesque streets of villages and the workings farmers and craftsmen.
