Toorop was a national and international leading artist around 1900.From 1903 until 1922 regular summer guest in Domburg. There he discovered how to catch light in his paintings. His Zeeland paintings are eye-catching. During his Domburg summers he attracted colleagues, friends, art collectors and critics to Domburg. Toorop connoisseur Francisca van Vloten says: "For Toorop Domburg was a very inspiring place, initially through the picturesque surroundings and especially the sea, soothing (far from the urban world), and the attraction of the local population, the beautiful Zeeland heads and costumes. In 1905 he became a Catholic, from then on he also used the local models for his apostle drawings (Domburgse and Westkappelse farmers).
