In the beginning of the last century (in 1897) Toorop lived in a small house on the Markt in Domburg, on Walcheren. He worked with a group of friendly painters, including Marinus Zwart and Piet Mondriaan. Each followed his individual personality, but they sought inspiration under "the Zeeland Light", in the dune landscape, the forests, and the characteristic Zeeland population.
