ROOFS AT MACHELEN
Oil on panel
23 x 22 cm.
Signed: lower left ‘J.Toorop’
Provenance: Private collection, The Netherlands.
Roofs at Machelen was made with a special technique. With a pallet knife Toorop put the paint on the canvas. We see the rooftops of the city Machelen in Belgium. In Machelen he shared for a long time a studio with the symbolist painter William Degouve de Nuncques. He became acquainted with the literary artists Emile Verhaeren and Maurice Maeterlinck and immersed himself in the artistic avant-garde milieu, which was dominated by James Ensor and Fernand Khnopff.
