Else Berg was a Jewish-Polish-Dutch artist. She was married to the Jewish-Dutch painter and graphic artist Mommie Schwarz. Both were killed in 1942 in concentration camp Auschwitz. After a visit to Paris, to see the modern art of that time, the couple settled around 1910 in Amsterdam. They worked together and made many journeys, of which the journey to Mallorca is best known. Else Berg worked here with Leo Gestel in a light, cubist style. Together with Gestel’s, her Mallorca-paintings represent the very best of Dutch cubism.
