Le Moulin à Rotterdam, ca. 1895

Oil on canvas,

40 x 65 cm.
Signed lower right: ‘Lebourg Rotterdam’In the years between 1894 and 1896 Lebourg painted regularly in the Netherlands and especially in the southern part of Holland. His impressionistic view already changed to a more heavy use of contrasting colours. The influence of Jongkind is remarkable.

This work is a forerunner of the fauvist style Lebourg adopts in the early twentieth century.

Lebourg initially studied at Evreux Lycée and the art school in Rouen and completed training at the École des Beaux Arts in Rouen and at an architecture studio. After meeting the famous collector Lapelier, Lebourg was appointed to the position of art teacher at the École des Beaux Arts of Algeria in 1872, which lasted until 1876. In 1876, Lebourg exhibited his works for the first time together with Monet, Sisley, Renoir and other artists on the Boulevard Montmartre. His repertoire consisted of motifs from the Ile-de-France, the Auvergne, and his Norman homeland, but also from Holland and Algeria.
